Onkyo have released the DV-SP504 upscalling / upconverting DVD player. The golden DV-SP504 is an update on the two year old DV-SP502, and can play CDs, DVD, and SACDs as well as MP3, JPG, DivX and WMA files on any of the media formats. The Onkyo DV-SP504 can upscale DVDs to 1080i and output this via the HDMI output to your HDTV. The DV-SP504 also features VLSC Vector Linear Shaping Circity) technology which helps to remove noise from movies and music to improve the quality. The Onkyo DV-SP504 is due for release on the 15th of November.

Denon are aiming their DVD-2930 and DVD-3930 upconverting DVD players at the older market for the millions of people with many “old” DVDs. They claim that their upscaling technology can provide a picture as good as or better than HD format.

The DVD-2930 and DVD-3930 uses technology first used on cruise missiles to improve images quality.

Denon are hoping that people with their new HDTV sets and many old DVD’s will want to get the best out of their previous purchase DVD and their HDTV buy purchasing one of their DVD players rather than diving into the HD-DVD / Blu-ray war. It makes sense to me as many of us have loads of DVDs, and will want the best picture we can get. It’s hard to believe that they can output better quality than a 1080p movie, but im sure it can do a great job at upscalling to 720p.
