We got a peek at ‘em, including their LN-S4696D, LN-S4096D, and LN-S3296D (priced at $4,000, $3,300, and $2,200), the 46, 40, and 32-inch versions of their 96 series of LCDs.
The 40 and 46-inch models are 1080p sets, but all include USB 1.1 and FireWire connections, and a 6000:1 contrast ratio. Also introduced were their new 32-inch LN-S3251D, and 26-inch LN-S2652D and LN-S2651D LCDs, all with integrated ATSC, as well as their 67-inch HL-S6767W and 61-inch HL-S6165W 1080p DLP HDTVs.
Samsung R7 Next Generation LCD HDTV Range
Samsung Gulf Electronics, the leading producer of televisions worldwide, took its technology leadership status in the GCC to newer heights by launching the new Samsung R7 LCD-HDTV range.
Hailed as a piece of art with high-tech functionality, the Samsung R7 arrived in the GCC markets after breaking records as the fastest selling LCD television in international markets.
K H Lee, General Manager of CE Division of Samsung Gulf Electronics, commented by saying: “Previously, price and video quality were the sole important criteria in selecting television sets. Now more and more consumers seek a sensitive design that expresses the consumer’s lifestyle. Our new R7 LCD-HDTV line addresses that need featuring luxury, design and quality; we are confident that the latest R7 will become Samsung’s product of the year in the Middle East.”
In terms of functionality, the Samsung R7 LCD-HDTV does not cut any slack. With 5000:1 contrast ratio and 12.8 billion colour through 10 bit signal processing, the new SAMSUNG LCD TV promises to redefine reality. With a viewing angle of 178 Degree, both horizontal and vertical, the R7 Series LCD TV promises undistorted viewing pleasure even from the extreme corner. Incorporating cutting edge technologies, this new model offers dramatically improved performance and viewing angle while decreasing thickness and power usage. More importantly, with a colour palette featuring 12.8 billion colours and Samsung’s proprietary contrast enhancement technology (DNIe) for improved contrast and colour expression, the viewable pictures represent a class on its own.
Samsung HP-S4253
The HP-S4253,
unlike Sony or Pioneer, who declare their allegiance to one side or the other in the LCD vs. plasma conflict, Samsung plays on both sides of the border. The 42-inch Samsung HP-S4253 plasma stands as a good counterpoint to big-screen LCDs, such as the Samsung LN-S4051D we recently reviewed, and sells for a few hundred dollars less. The HP-S4253 plasma boasts a glossy black exterior and hidden speakers, and its feature set is anchored by excellent connectivity. Its image quality doesn’t measure up to that of the best plasmas, however, and it costs a bit too much to compete against the most aggressively priced bargain models.
Design of Samsung HP-S4253
Samsung has apparently made a conscious decision to make its LCDs look more attractive than its plasmas. Flat-panel LCD models such as the Samsung LN-S4051D, visible in hyperbole-filled advertisements everywhere, have a friendly yet stylish, rounded-off appearance, an oval base, and a wide V shape along the bottom. The HP-S4253 plasma, on the other hand, is the standard sharp-cornered rectangle atop a nonswiveling stand. It shares its swankier brand mate’s glossy black finish and concealed speakers, which are stashed inside the angled opening along the bottom of the cabinet. This plasma’s relatively thick frame contributes to bigger dimensions compared to many plasmas; the HP-S4253 measures 41.5 by 30 by 13.5 inches and weighs 88 pounds including the stand, while the panel itself is 3.8 inches deep.
The company revamped its remote, improving the new model with a smarter button layout, better differentiation between the keys, and a longer, easier-to-hold shape. Although it still lacks backlighting, we appreciate its ability to control four other devices. Samsung’s internal menu system looks the same as ever. We found it intuitive to navigate and appreciated the ability to choose and rename inputs from the menu, as well as the helpful information explaining various menu items.
Samsung SVP-56K3HDB First ACAP HDTV
Samsung unveiled the SVP-56K3HDB today, the first 56″ PDP TV that is ACAP bidirectional data broadcasting compatible. ACAP stands for Advanced Common Application Platform and it’s a standard used in the US and Korea. It allows you to send data in 2 directions, so for example you can look at additional photos of a football match that you’re watching, and you can interact with this information by asking detailed information about a certain player for example.
We know what you’re thinking: another Samsung HDTV, another HDTV technology standard, another day. But you might actually want to check out Samsung’s 56-inch SVP-56K3HDB, the first production model featuring ACAP. For those who haven’t previously heard anything about it, the Advanced Common Application Platform (ACAP) standard was developed with the intention of being the future universal standard for interactive television (and is already a part of the ATSC spec in the US). Oh, sure, iTV’s been around in various incarnations since forever, but there’s never been an internationally standardized internet-connected TV system based around the concept of moving apps and data to Read more
