Envision have just announced three more LCD HDTVs to add to their of two newly released HDTVs. Their new high performance Envision Omni series are available in 26-, 32- and 42-inch sizes. All three LCD screens offer a 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution for 720p and 1080i HD formats with an 8-ms response time. Read more

We have seen a couple of LCDs (monitors) designed primarily for computers but are just at home being used as a HDTV, either through featuring a built in TV tuner, or by having the appropriate inputs. NEC’s new line of AccuSync LCDs WMGX series feature the normal DVI / VGA inputs, but also component and HDMI inputs with full HDCP support for use with encoded content such as Blu-ray and HD DVD players and also the next generation of games consoles. Uniden have released two new LCD HDTVs with feature the top 1080p resolution in the form of a 42-inch Uniden TL42AZ1, and a 37-inch Uniden TL37AZ1. The WinBook 46D1 LCD comes in at a large 46-inches but manages to keep to price down to just $1,300, a great deal for a LCD of this size. The 46D1 might not be the best looking set, but it has great features and beats the also budget Vizio GV46L in a number of ways. Cnet have taken a look at the WinBook 46D1 and say a native resolution of 1,366×768 enables it to resolve every detail of 720p HDTV sources; all sources, whether HDTV, DVD, or computer are scaled to fit the native resolution. As a bargain model, the WinBook lacks the 1080p resolution that’s becoming common nowadays.

This year is going to be a great year for LCD HDTVs, even more so than last year. Over the last 12 months LCDs have come a very long way over the more traditional “flat slim displays” plasmas. In the previous years plasmas have lead the way, but now LCD are the king of the HDTVs. Cheaper production costs have been the main reason for this boost enabling bigger LCDs to be produced which have more features the the plasma equivalent. LCD screen sizes can now compete with plasma and also more often provide more pixels and a higher resolution giving full 1080p and fast refresh rates.

We believe the Acer AT4220 to be the cheapest 42-inch LCD currently available. Acer, who are probably better know for their laptops and LCD computer monitors have released the AT4220 at a very low price of just £775 ($1500). The Hannspree Xv is a very cheap 32-inch LCD HDTV, from a brand which most people would have no idea who they are. They are better known for their smaller strange shape TV’s such as football shaped. Syntax-Brillian Olevia will be a brand you are familiar with if you shop at Amazon and buy.com but not the highstreet. They are priced much cheaper than the main HDTV players, but can they complete? BigpictureBigSound has a review of the Olevia 542 and say, in terms of connectivity, the 542i has all the inputs you’d expect plus one or two you might not. It includes 1 HDMI A/V input (with HDCP), 2 component video, 2 composite, 2 S-video and a VGA port which you can also use (via an adapter) as a third component video input. I’d have liked to see a second HDMI input, but if you have a home theater receiver or external video scaler with HDMI-switching then this will not be necessary.
