Western Digital have released a very interesting product, away from their usual HHD products. The Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player is a small unit that will stream content from a USB drive, turning your USB drive in to an HD media player.
Basically the WD TV HD Media player enables you to plug in your USB hard drive, or even USB key pen drive into the back of the unit, and stream / playback full HD 1080p content on your HDTV. The HDMI output support full 1080p HD output with audio. There is also composite output.
You can access two USB drives simultaneously, and control everything in 1080p navigation with the included remote control. The portable unit also comes with a My Passport hard drive stand and media converter software.
The unit is just 1.6 x 4.9 x 3.9-inches in size, and costs just (around) $129, which seems like a very good deal. If I didn’t already have a HD media center, I would be very tempted by the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player.
Update: We just got news of the supported codecs: H.264, MKV, MOV (great!), MPEG 1/2/4, WMV9, Xvid, AVC, Divx. WAV/PCM/LPCM, AAC, FLAC, Dolby Digital, AIF/AIFF MKA, MP3, WMA, and OGG. Along with the normal image formats.
