51GB HD DVD | Triple Layer HD DVD
The HD format war is still raging and HD DVD is hoping to get one up on Blu-ray with it’s new 51GB triple layer HD DVD disc. The single sided, three layered disc increases capacity to 51GB, up from the 30GB dual layered disc. This new 51GB HD DVD disc brings capacity up to Blu-rays 50GB discs.
This might not be the best thing for HD DVD after all, unless there is backwards compatibility somehow, we have heard about second and third generation HD DVD players that are rumored to support the new discs via a firmware update.
Also of interest are the new “twin” DVD / HD DVD combo disc, which as one 5GB DVD layer and two 17GB HD DVD layers, enabling the disc to be played as a HD DVD in a HD DVD player, and of course as a standard DVD in a standard DVD player.
